Digger

Film Review 17th October 2026

Rating: 3 out of 5.

I’m a bit late seeing this, mainly for logistical reasons rather than anything to do with the reviews. I’m aware that feelings about the film are mixed, and it’s already being called a flop because of its reported $150 million budget and disappointing box office returns. I’d also heard that it’s unusual and could become a cult hit, which only added to my curiosity.

I finally got to see it at the ODEON Luxe Leicester Square, which I understand is the only cinema in the UK showing it in 35mm VistaVision. The format runs 35mm film horizontally, allowing for a larger image with greater detail. Basically, I was in the area and don’t often get the chance to see films presented this way, so why not?

Digger is a very difficult film to review without giving away spoilers. The central character is Digger, the head of an American mining company operating in Greenland, and that’s about as much as I’m willing to say about the plot. I know that sounds odd, but this is an unconventional film with a couple of major turns that are best experienced knowing as little as possible.

There’s some dark comedy, along with events that might get you thinking about current politics and environmental issues, although it never feels preachy. It isn’t until the very end that everything fully makes sense. Until then, it remains engaging, even if I can understand why some people might hate it, depending on how they interpret the story as a whole.

I’m glad I saw it. It certainly made me think, even if I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece. It’s no disaster either. The director makes you work for the payoff, and you need to stay focused on what’s actually happening.

I’m also not sure how much difference watching it in VistaVision made without seeing it on a standard screen for comparison. Definitely worth a watch, just be patient!
