Soho Theatre
Review 21 October 2026
Synopsis: Soho Theatre’s favourite “funny ghoul” herself, Dina Martina will descend upon the dungeon of Dean Street with a hilarious new show this October.
As the clock strikes 7:15pm, that portly star of the pumpkin patch Dina Martina will come back to life and haunt you with new songs that’ll thrill, new video that’ll chill, and new costumes that’ll scare the bejesus out of you! Whether you’re a ghost, a ghoul or a zombie, you won’t want to miss the frighteningly funny Dina Martina: Halloweena!
Dina Martina is an American cabaret and theatre entertainer whose hilarious performances are characterized by a “different” type of singing, mixed with peculiar storytelling and costumes that other entertainers might not choose to wear.
My review: Dina Martina Halloweena at Soho Theatre is a gloriously chaotic descent into the mad world of Dina Martina.
Before the show even begins, Halloween sound effects fill the theatre. The stage glows orange, framed by two blank projector screens, creating an appropriately eerie atmosphere. Then Dina appears to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” in oversized glittery gold glasses, a tight black outfit, cape, horned hat, part Disney Evil Queen, part Halloween nightmare and gold boots. During Vincent Price’s rap, she casually grabs a bowl of pasta and starts eating. Welcome to Dina’s world.
The evening is a sequence of bizarre, brilliantly delivered stories and songs. Dina’s tale of being in hospital is followed by a delicious description of her journey from the hospital to the theatre, almost as delicious as the pasta seemed to be.
Talking of food, Dina then launches into “I Want Candy”, handing out sweets to the audience. I was lucky enough to receive an almond rock. I didn’t dare eat it until I had examined it under the train lights later. I’m pleased to report that I appear to have survived, so far.
A story and song about Bela Lugosi, cleverly mixed with “That’s Not My Name”, works wonderfully, the joke is in the story, and Dina’s delivery makes it even better. Later, she disappears and returns wearing a huge skull head, handing out random Halloween gifts to audience members. The man next to me received a joke severed finger, which felt entirely appropriate.
The projector screens then come to life for a wonderfully surreal sequence featuring Dina’s mouth mouthing along to “Science Fiction/Double Feature” from The Rocky Horror Show. As usual, Dina mispronounces various words, while clips from old science-fiction films feature her in increasingly ridiculous ways. It is much funnier than I’m making it sound.
Dina eventually returns in a pumpkin-style outfit that reveals rather more of her than is decent, before launching into a long monologue about the environment. The contrast between the costume and the seriousness of the speech had the audience in hysterics. I was laughing so hard I developed a stitch.
The final song is Dina’s version of “The Devil Went Down to Georgia”, which is hilarious for reasons I won’t spoil. And that is really the joy of Dina Martina: the less you know beforehand, the better.
Dina Martina knows exactly how to make a Halloween show absurd, hilarious and completely unforgettable. Go and see Halloweena for nearly an hour of bonkers jokes, surreal songs, audience giveaways and glorious Halloween chaos.
