Edinburgh Fringe Review 19th August 2026

Olivia Xing’s Baby of Colour is a very enjoyable and carefully constructed hour of comedy that blends the personal, political and occasionally surreal.

A visit to the gynaecologist frames the show, providing an effective opening and closing structure for Xing’s reflections on identity, reproductive anxiety and life as an immigrant in Donald Trump’s America.

One particularly memorable joke concerns the gynaecologist describing Xing’s vagina as slanted, prompting her to wonder whether this is a medical observation or whether the doctor is being racist. It is an excellent example of the way Xing uses misunderstandings and racial stereotypes to find comedy in uncomfortable situations.

The show feels well thought out, with its different ideas connected by Xing’s distinctive perspective. Some audience interaction gives the performance an immediate, conversational quality, while a song about her cat provides an unexpected and playful change of pace.

Xing is particularly effective when using her own experiences to explore wider questions about belonging, autonomy and the assumptions placed upon women and immigrants. The comedy remains accessible while still having something meaningful to say.

A smart, engaging and strongly recommended hour from a comedian with an original perspective.
